Current Mood: accomplished
I am now a proud addition to the Metal Gear Online beta test.
as a hardcore, diehard MGS fan, I don't think I could be any happier right now.
as a game enthusiast in general, I don't think I could SUCK ANY WORSE AT THE GAME. ouch.
They took out wall-clinging and replaced it with a new system, one I'm not too particularly fond of so far, but it's alright. I think it's a bit of a nod towards Splinter Cell, actually. They've adopted a bit of a resident evil style system where you HAVE to hold one of the shoulder triggers to aim (and then a second trigger to shoot).
not only that, but if you try to TK anybody (no, i didn't, friendly fire accidents happen), SOP takes over and locks your gun for the next 2 or 3 seconds or so. (You get a resounding flashing red light that basically calls you a jackass for not checking your fire too) You can really tell that the nanomachines are hard at work in MGO. When wired in with a team you can pretty much see just about anything. There is truly "no place to hide" - and I like that.
On an even more positive note, you can run while crouched now, which has been a NECESSARY addition since MGS2. After playing a lot of Splinter Cell and then going back to MGS, it was very frustrating to not be able to move at all while crouched.
( prettymei will like this) CQC has dramatically improved. You could do a fair amount of stuff with Big Boss's CQC style in MGS3, but in MGS4 you can actually disarm people, use multiple methods of physical disablement, and *gasp* i guess what I'm getting at is, there's a real close combat system now. CQC is very polished to the point where you can actually use it while holding a full sized rifle. Not only that but the stun knife is a brilliant addition that should have been added again, two games ago.
SNE mode is awesome. It's far better than it was in MGS3:S. Two teams of PMCs fight to take out Snake and Snake more or less gets caught in the crossfire every time. The PMCs have one mission: eliminate Snake (and his little Metal Gear robot buddy, which I'm pretty sure is playable by another person).
Snake has one mission: STAY ALIVE.
well, when you have waves of 14 PMCs or so rushing you, it's kind of hard. :p I guess that's why they give you OctoCamo and Mini MG though.
passing thoughts.. the automatching system is very good. Far better than what I was forced to settle with on the Wii. Not only that, but it's fast too. I forgot what it was like to actually get to play on a REAL console with a REAL online userbase.
I believe that if Mr. Kojima and his team continue to polish everything all the way up to very release, then we may very well have a COD4/Halo killer on our hands.
cliffs: buy MGS4 on launch - it comes with MGO. instant GOTY in my book. |
